How to register at Agrijob?
Nothing is easier! The residents who are interested in being employed as agricultural workers can register at Agrijob. By subscribing, all workers will receive a free card.  

To obtain the card, the worker will provide to Agrijob :

  • Name, address, and phone number;
  • Social insurance card "SIN",
  • Work permit, if the social insurance card starts by number "9"
  • Another valid I.D. card (health insurance card, birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, document of eligibility to the Federal Health Program (FSI), etc.

The worker will have to sign his/her card and make sure that he/she has it at worksites.

What is the hourly rate?
The minimum wage paid to the agricultural workers in the Montreal region in 2008 is of $ 9,04/hour.

The salary is composed by the following:

  • basic wage: $ 8,69/hour
  • 4% for annual leave indemnity: $ 0,35/hour.

The agreements of work are variable.  The remuneration is paid according to the duration of the employment contract.

In some jobs (strawberries, apples, beans, etc), the workers can be paid by efficiency (piecework), but this, only after an agreement with the employer is made.

What is the working schedule?
The working hours are distributed as follows:
8 hours of work per day, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, including:

  • 10 minutes break in the morning (paid);
  • 30 minutes or 1 hour for lunch, depending on the agreement with the producer (unpaid);
  • 10 minutes break in the afternoon (paid).

However, it's important to know that the bus leaves between 6:00 and 6:15 am. So, you should take the first metro at 5:30 am to arrive in time at the boarding place.

What is the definition of an occasional / daily employment?
It's a duration between 1 day to 14 weeks.

What is the definition of seasonal employment?
It’s a duration between 14 weeks and 9 months working with the same employer.

 

What are the peak periods for the harvesters?

Is it possible for a recipient of welfare to hold an occasional / seasonal employment?
Yes, the recipient of welfare can hold an occasional / seasonal employment. Also, the Ministère de l'Emploi, de la Solidarité sociale et de la Famille allows some exemptions for the employment income.
For example : 200,00$/month for one adult without a limited capacity for employment and 300,00$/month for two adults without a limited capacity for employment.

What are the advantages for the recipient of welfare to hold a seasonal employment?
It`s worthwhile because it helps you :

  • Improve your financial situation;
  • Increase your chances of finding permanent employment;

Moreover, one time by nine months period and during three consecutive months, you will benefit of the next advantages :

  • You will continue to be eligible for claim slips and thus for dental and drug services under the employment assistance plan;
  • You will benefit from more flexible rules, once you begin receiving employment assistance again  like :
    • Your liquid assets are not taken into consideration when calculating your benefits;
    • You conserve the total number of months on employment assistance;
    • Your vacation pay is not taken into consideration when calculating your benefits;
    • Your benefits  are calculated based on a complete month.

Can an Employment Insurance (EI) claimant work during the benefits period?
Most people know that you can’t work full-time and receive regular EI benefits. But did you know that the rules let you receive some benefits if you work part-time? If you are receiving regularparental or compassionate care benefits, you can earn 25% of your weekly benefit or 50$, whichever is higher, without changing the amount of EI benefits you will receive for that week. You must, however, always declare all your earnings.
